    Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA) is responding to the government of Québec's June 2011 regulation which mandates the creation of an industry-led program to recycle a wide range of electronic products in the province.   • January 13, 2012 - Northwest Territories issues RFP for E-Waste Inventory and Feasibility Assessment

  • November 1, 2011 - Noted economic analyst outlines benefits of harmonized, industry-led stewardship approaches

    Earlier this year ACES engaged David Campbell of Moncton-based Jupia Consultants to undertake an independent economic analysis of an EHF-based stewardship approach for managing end-of-life electronics in New Brunswick. The report investigates the tangible benefits of environmental stewardship associated with end-of-life electronics and the benefits of a visible and transparent environmental handling fee.   • October 17, 2011 - EPRA seeking Manitoba Program Manager

    Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA) represents both brand name manufacturers and retailers of electronic products and is responsible for regulated end of life electronics recycling across Canada. EPRA is looking to create a program in Manitoba that will recycle a wide range of electronic products. This creates the need for a Program Manager to oversee the effectiveness and integrity of the process which will involve some $1 to $5 million in annual expenditures, including a consumer awareness marketing program. Reporting to a Regional Director, the Program Manager in Manitoba will be responsible for operational work and contracts with various third party vendors, including collectors, transporters, consolidators and primary processors.   • June 7, 2011 - Recycler Qualification Office (RQO) established

    Over the past year, Canada’ regulated electronics recycling programs have worked closely with Electronics Product Stewardship Canada (EPSC) to undertake a review and revision of the Electronics Recycling Standard (ERS). In addition to updating the ERS, in April 2011, the Recycler Qualification Office (RQO) was established in cooperation with the industry-led provincial programs and EPSC to manage all recycler assessments and approvals on behalf of the programs. This national office was designed to provide a streamlined application and approval process for perspective primary recyclers, while undertaking recycler assessments in a timely manner, with detailed, thorough, and objective results.

    The RQP is effective now for all new applications as well as changes to any existing approvals. In addition, re-assessments under the current approvals will begin on July 1, 2011, and all recyclers must be operating to the new standard by this date.   • May 30, 2011 - Industry Consultation on ESABC’s draft Stewardship Plan for 2012-2016

    The Electronics Stewardship Association of British Columbia (ESABC) has released their draft Stewardship Plan for 2012-2016. ESABC is an industry-led, regulated electronics stewardship association which was established in 2006 by Electronics Product Stewardship Canada and the Retail Council of Canada. The draft plan covers the second five years (2012-2016) of the operation ESABC, in accordance with the requirements of Section 6 of the BC Recycling Regulation. It also addresses the expansion of the Program to include additional selected Phase IV products set out in Schedule 3, Section 2.2 of the Recycling Regulation commencing July 2012.   • February 1, 2011 - ESABC issues RFP for Research on Unaccounted, Regulated End-of-Life Electronics in British Columbia

    The Electronics Stewardship Association of British Columbia (ESABC) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to seek individuals or organizations to research and report on the identification and examination of current practices for handling or disposing of regulated end-of-life electronics in British Columbia not collected by ESABC and thus "unaccountable" to ESABC.
    Responses are due by February 28th.

  • February 1, 2011 - Selected changes to classification of regulated products under ACES, ESABC and SWEEP take effect today

    Effective February 1, 2011, the ACES, ESABC and SWEEP programs will implement changes to the classification of select obligated products. These harmonized changes are intended to better reflect the manner in which the obligated products are supplied and the cost of managing these items in the programs. The changes target three broad issues:

    1. Relocating several small products to the Personal/Portable Audio/Video category from the Home Audio/Video category;
    2. Clarifying the inclusion of conference/speaker phones into the telephone category; and
    3. Clarifying the handling of bundled security cameras.

  • December 16, 2010 - ACES, ESABC, OES and SWEEP Approve the revised Recycler Qualification Program (2010)

    Canada's four industry-led electronics stewardship programs have approved the Recycler Qualification Program (2010) for use in auditing and approving program recyclers. The RQP is an eight part publication that defines the Stewardship Program’s minimum requirements for Recyclers to ensure that EOLE is handled in an environmentally sound and socially acceptable manner that protects the environment and safeguards worker health and safety.

  • October 6, 2010 - Reuse in Canada’s EOLE Stewardship Programs

    Presentation by Sean De Vries, Director of Technical Harmonization to the E-Scrap 2010 conference in New Orleans on how Canada’s regulated end-of-life electronics programs are addressing reuse and refurbishment issues.

  • September 21, 2010 - ACES issues third Annual Report

    Atlantic Canada Electronics Stewardship (ACES) hosted its 2010 Annual General Meeting in Halifax and tabled the program’s third Annual Report.

  • August 31, 2010 Manitoba consults on industry-led stewardship plan for waste electronics

    The Province of Manitoba has opened a public consultation on the draft Manitoba Product Stewardship Program Plan for End-of-Life Electrical and Electronic Equipment. This industry-led plan was developed jointly by EPSC, RCC and CAMA. Written comments are due by September 27, 2010. More info here.

    British Columbia's ESABC industry-led electronics stewardship program becomes the fourth province-wide recycling initiative to include a broader range of products under their programs, including home, portable and vehicle-based audio-video products, as well as selected telecommunication devices.   • June 30, 2010 - Consultations on the draft revisions to the Electronics Product Stewardship Canada (EPSC) Electronics Recycling Standard (ERS)

    Since the launch of the ERS in 2006, EPSC and the regulated Provincial stewardship programs (ACES, ARMA, ESABC, OES and SWEEP) have been working on draft revisions to this pioneering standard to ensure its continuing suitability and effectiveness. A new draft Standard is now available for review and comment by stakeholders. There are two documents of note here: the Electronics Recycling Standard Draft for Consultation and a document detailing the consultation approach, including information on the submission of comments (see the ERS Consultation Plan). Written comments are due August 15, 2010.

  • June 24, 2010 - ACES issues REOI for electronics recycling

    Atlantic Canada Electronics Stewardship (ACES), is requesting submissions to a request for expression of interest (REOI) from individuals, businesses or groups interested in providing contracted services for the environmentally sound and socially responsible primary recycling of End-of-Life Electronics (EOLE) collected through the ACES Program. Interested parties are encouraged to review and respond as outlined in the REOI documentation as provided on the ACES website. Submissions are due to ACES by September 24, 2010 at 5:00 pm AST

  • June 10, 2010 - ACES program expands into Prince Edward Island

    Richard Brown, PEI's Minister of the Environment, Energy & Forestry has approved the stewardship program submitted by the Atlantic Canada Electronics Stewardship (ACES) program.   • July 27, 2009 Standardized Credit Request Memo for POPs seeking Reconciliation from Remitter’s related to Phase I product EHF revisions

    ACES, ESABC and SWEEP are pleased to provide an automated spreadsheet (in Microsoft Excel format) for POP members looking to report back to their suppliers (remitters) on inventory of effected products as of July 31, 2009. The guidelines for this process can be found here. Please note the spreadsheet has individual tabs to report by program (ACES, ESABC & SWEEP).

  • July 20, 2009 New Remitter’s Guidelines for EHF Credits to POPs related to Phase I product EHF revisions

    As a result of changes to Environmental Handling Fees (EHFs) scheduled to take effect on August 1, 2009, POP members of ACES, ESABC and SWEEP may have paid their supplier (remitter) a different EHF rate for obligated products than what their customer will be charged after August 1st. To ensure that remitters who reimburse POP for the difference between the EHF on unsold inventory and the new EHF can recover these amounts from the programs, a set of guidelines has been developed.

  • June 29, 2009 RFP for electronics stewardship performance measures

    ACES, ESABC, OES & SWEEP are jointly seeking proposals for research and recommendations on performance measures which regulated, industry-led electronics stewardship programs may consider in order to encourage continuous program improvement, to allow for comparative analysis on program impacts, and to satisfy regulatory requirements. **UPDATED July 20, 2009** see Update Document #3 here. Previous documents (July 17th update document #2 here, and July 6th Q&A document here) still apply. Submission deadline remains July 21, 2009 @ 5:00pm EST.

  • May 1, 2009 Revised Environmental Handling Fees (EHFs) for Phase I Products - Final Report and Associated Materials:

    The Board of Directors for ACES, ESABC and SWEEP have all reviewed and approved the April 24, 2009 final report from Intergroup, Revised Environmental Handling Fees for Phase I Products, including recommendations for revised product categorization and EHFs. Notice has been provided to all program members, and these changes will be in effect August 1, 2009. Please contact each of the programs directly for more details.
